Halo on original Xbox (or "OG Xbox") falls under two catagories- modded and unmodded vanilla. Some of the more popular mods are Neutral Host Edition (NHE) and Halo 1.5. These can be played locally via splitscreen and/or system link, or use a virtual LAN to fake a system link over the internet using a program like XLAN. The main purpose of NHE is to eliminate host advantage while Halo 1.5 simply provides additonal maps. Both of these modded versions of Halo are compatible. Any information on this website related to the Xbox will be primarilly for setting up mods and virtual LANs since vanilla setup needs no explanation.
There are two versions of Halo on the PC- the normal installation of the game with stock maps and an upgraded version that supports custom maps. The normal installation of the game and the Custom Edition of the game both have the abbreviation HCE- Halo Combat Evolved and Halo Custom Edition; however, any instance of HCE on this website will refer to the Custom Edition version and consequently any files or guides on this website will also be for the Custom Edition. There are several recommended mods that should be installed to improve competitive gameplay, such as HAC and Chimera. These mods, along with a growing collection of custom maps, make HCE very versatile.
